"There's an old saying: 'You tell me a fact and I'll learn, and you tell me the truth and I'll believe, but tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever,' — what we really want to work on with Indigenous people ... is tell us a story with your map."
Tara Rush is Kanien'kehá:ka from Akwesasne and Admin Business Partner at Google. She collaborated with Indigenous communities, The Firelight Group and Google Earth Outreach to add Indigenous lands to Google Maps and Google Earth. She also worked with Firelight to run mapping workshops in Victoria, Waterloo, Vancouver and Winnipeg and Montreal to build partnerships and support communities in their efforts to visualize their land, water and cultural resources through GIS systems. To date, over 1000 Indigenous community mappers have attended these workshops and the Indigenous geospatial network continues to grow.
