"A lot of the people I meet that are Native American have this connection to where they came from. They're natural thinkers. They look at the world around them and figure out how the world works and try to think of an explanation behind that just like engineers take a look at a problem and try to solve that. It's a natural ingrained ability."

John Herrington is a member of the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma and is the first Native American to fly in space. After receiving his bachelor's degree in applied Mathematics from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs he was commissioned into the United States Navy. From there, Herrington become a U.S. Naval Pilot and Test Pilot until he was selected by NASA as a Mission Specialist for a space shuttle mission to the International Space Station.
